Silliman University is a private research university located in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Philippines. Founded in 1901 by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, it is the first American university in the Philippines and in Asia.
History
Silliman University was established on August 28, 1901, as Silliman Institute by Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and his wife, Laura, with the support of Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a retired businessman and philanthropist from Cohoes, New York. The university was initially intended to provide Christian education to the local population.
