Organic compound
1-Nonanol, also known as nonyl alcohol or pelargonic alcohol, is a fatty alcohol with the chemical formula C_9H_20O. It is a colorless to very pale yellow liquid with a characteristic odor.
Production[edit]
1-Nonanol can be produced by the hydrogenation of nonanoic acid or by the oligomerization of ethylene followed by oxidation.
Uses[edit]
1-Nonanol is used in the manufacture of plasticizers, lubricants, and surfactants. It is also used as a solvent and in the production of perfumes and flavors.
Chemical Properties[edit]
1-Nonanol is a primary alcohol. It is slightly soluble in water but is miscible with most organic solvents. It has a boiling point of 214°C and a melting point of -6°C.
Safety[edit]
1-Nonanol has a relatively low toxicity with an LD50 of 3560 mg/kg in rats. However, it can cause irritation to the skin and eyes upon contact.
