Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever (pronounced: /ˈjɛloʊ ˈfiːvər/) is an acute viral disease. It is known in etymological terms as 'Yellow' due to the jaundice-like symptoms it causes, and 'Fever' due to the high temperature associated with the disease.

Causes

Yellow Fever is caused by the Yellow Fever virus, a type of Flavivirus. The virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected female mosquito (Aedes aegypti).

Symptoms

The symptoms of Yellow Fever include fever, headache, jaundice, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. A small proportion of patients who contract the virus develop severe symptoms and approximately half of those die within 7 to 10 days.

Prevention and Treatment

The Yellow Fever vaccine is an effective preventive measure against the disease. There is no specific treatment for Yellow Fever; care is based on symptoms and includes rehydration, pain relief, and treatment for fever and liver and kidney failure.
