Marriage is a socially or ritually recognized union or legal contract between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between them, between them and their children, and between them and their in-laws. The definition of marriage varies according to different cultures, but it is principally an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually sexual, are acknowledged. In some cultures, marriage is recommended or considered to be compulsory before pursuing any sexual activity.

Definition[edit]

Marriage, also called matrimony or wedlock, is a culturally recognised union between people, called spouses, that establishes rights and obligations between them, as well as between them and their children, and between them and their in-laws. It is considered a cultural universal, but the definition of marriage varies between cultures and religions, and over time.

Types of Marriage[edit]

There are different types of marriage practices across the globe. These include Monogamy, Polygamy, Polygyny, Polyandry, and Group marriage.

History[edit]

The history of marriage is often considered in three general ways: a legal history, a social history, and a cultural history.

Marriage and Religion[edit]

Marriage has been associated with different religions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and others. Each religion has its own views and practices related to marriage.

Marriage and Law[edit]

Marriage laws vary greatly from one country to another, and even within regions of the same country. Laws can include issues related to consent, age of marriage, and prohibitions of incest and bigamy.
