Mazipredone (brand name Depersolon), also known as depersolone, is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid which is or has been marketed in the Czech Republic and Hungary.
Etymology[edit]
The name "Mazipredone" is derived from the chemical structure of the drug. The "Mazi" part of the name refers to the drug's synthetic nature, while "predone" is a common suffix used in the naming of corticosteroids, indicating the drug's class.
Pharmacology[edit]
Mazipredone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid. Glucocorticoids are a type of steroid hormone that are produced in the adrenal cortex and have a variety of effects on the body, including anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive actions. Corticosteroids like mazipredone mimic the effects of natural glucocorticoids and can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including inflammatory diseases and autoimmune disorders.
Clinical Use[edit]
Mazipredone has been marketed in the Czech Republic and Hungary. It is used in the treatment of various conditions that respond to corticosteroids, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and certain allergic reactions.
Related Terms[edit]
- Glucocorticoid: A type of steroid hormone that is produced in the adrenal cortex and has a variety of effects on the body, including anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive actions.
- Corticosteroid: A class of steroid hormones that includes glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. They are involved in a wide range of physiological processes, including stress response, immune response, and regulation of inflammation, carbohydrate metabolism, protein catabolism, blood electrolyte levels, and behavior.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: A long-term autoimmune disorder that primarily affects joints. It typically results in warm, swollen, and painful joints.
- Asthma: A long-term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. It is characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and easily triggered bronchospasms.
- Allergic reactions: A reaction that occurs when the immune system overreacts to a harmless substance known as an allergen.
