Zingiber zerumbet, commonly known as shampoo ginger, is a species of plant in the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It is native to Southeast Asia and has been widely cultivated in tropical regions for its medicinal and ornamental properties.

Description[edit]

Zingiber zerumbet is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows from a rhizome. The plant can reach heights of 1.2 to 2.4 meters. The leaves are lanceolate, arranged in two ranks along the stem, and can grow up to 20-30 cm in length. The inflorescence is a cone-like structure that emerges from the base of the plant, with overlapping bracts that turn red as they mature.

Habitat and Distribution[edit]

Zingiber zerumbet is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. It thrives in warm, humid environments and is often found in rainforests and along riverbanks. The plant has been introduced to other tropical regions, including Hawaii, where it is known as _awapuhi.

Uses[edit]

The rhizomes of Zingiber zerumbet are used in traditional medicine for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The plant is also known for its use in cosmetics, particularly as a natural shampoo. The sap from the mature flower cones can be squeezed out and used as a hair conditioner.

Cultivation[edit]

Zingiber zerumbet is cultivated for both ornamental and medicinal purposes. It prefers well-drained soil and partial shade. The plant is propagated through division of the rhizomes, which should be planted at the beginning of the rainy season for optimal growth.
