Zaire
Zaire
Zaire (pronunciation: /zaɪˈrɛər/), also known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo or DRC, is a country located in Central Africa. It was named after the Zaire River, now known as the Congo River, the second longest river in Africa. The term "Zaire" is derived from the Portuguese word "zaire", which itself is a misinterpretation of the Kikongo word nzere ("river").
Etymology
The name "Zaire" is a Portuguese corruption of a Kikongo word "nzere" which means "river". The Portuguese explorers who reached the Congo River in the late 15th century mistakenly pronounced and spelled the word as "zaire".
