Wuhan (wū-hàn)
Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei province in the People's Republic of China. It is the largest city in Hubei and the most populous city in Central China, with a population of over 11 million, the ninth-most populous Chinese city and one of the nine National Central Cities of China.
Etymology
The name "Wuhan" comes from the city's historical status as the confluence of the Han River and the Yangtze River. "Wu" refers to the northern part of the city, which lies on the left bank of the Yangtze River, while "Han" refers to the southern part of the city, which lies on the right bank of the Han River.
