World No Tobacco Day (pronunciation: /wɜːrld noʊ təˈbækoʊ deɪ/) is an annual event organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and to encourage a global effort to reduce tobacco consumption.

The term "World No Tobacco Day" is a straightforward combination of the words "world", "no", "tobacco", and "day". It signifies a day where the global community is encouraged to abstain from tobacco use.
History
World No Tobacco Day was first introduced by the World Health Organization in 1987. The WHO's World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38, calling for 7 April 1988 to be a "world no-smoking day". In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.
