William Kennedy Smith
American physician and founder of Physicians Against Land Mines
William Kennedy Smith (born September 4, 1960) is an American physician and the founder of Physicians Against Land Mines, an organization dedicated to the eradication of land mines and the promotion of humanitarian efforts in war-torn regions. He is a member of the prominent Kennedy family.
Early Life and Education
William Kennedy Smith was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina, to Stephen Edward Smith and Jean Kennedy Smith. He is the nephew of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, and Robert F. Kennedy, a former United States Attorney General and U.S. Senator.
Smith attended Boston University where he earned his undergraduate degree. He later attended Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he received his M.D. degree.
Career
After completing his medical education, Smith worked in various medical institutions, focusing on rehabilitation medicine. He has been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts, particularly in the field of land mine eradication.
Physicians Against Land Mines
In 1997, Smith founded Physicians Against Land Mines, an organization aimed at addressing the global issue of land mines. The organization works to provide medical care to land mine victims and advocates for the removal of land mines in affected areas. It also collaborates with other international organizations to promote land mine awareness and prevention.
Personal Life
Smith has been involved in various philanthropic activities and continues to work in the medical field. He is also known for his involvement in the Kennedy family's public service initiatives.
Legal Issues
In 1991, Smith was accused of sexual assault in a highly publicized case. He was acquitted of all charges after a trial that received extensive media coverage.
