Whey protein (/weɪ/ proʊˈtiːn) is a mixture of proteins isolated from whey, the liquid material created as a by-product of cheese production.

Etymology

The term "whey" is of Old English origin, derived from the word "hwæg". The term "protein" comes from the Greek word "proteios", meaning "primary" or "in the lead".

Definition

Whey protein is a high-quality protein, containing all of the essential amino acids. It is highly digestible and absorbed quickly compared to other proteins.

Types of Whey Protein

There are three primary types of whey protein: Whey protein concentrate (WPC), Whey protein isolate (WPI), and Whey protein hydrolysate (WPH).

  • Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC): WPC contains low levels of fat and low levels of carbohydrates. The percentage of protein in WPC depends on how concentrated it is. Lower end concentrates tend to have 30% protein and higher end up to 90%.
  • Whey Protein Isolate (WPI): WPIs are further processed to remove all the fat and lactose. WPI is usually at least 90% protein.
  • Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH): WPH is considered to be the "predigested" form of whey protein as it has already undergone partial hydrolysis, a process necessary for the body to absorb protein.

Whey protein is a popular supplement among athletes and bodybuilders for its ability to aid in muscle recovery and growth. It is also used for weight loss and may be beneficial for people with HIV, cancer, and other health conditions.
