Early life
Melinda Lou Thomas was born on September 14, 1961, in Columbus, Ohio. She was the fourth child of Dave and Lorraine Thomas. Her father, Dave Thomas, opened the first Wendy's restaurant in 1969, naming it after her nickname, "Wendy." The name "Wendy" was derived from the difficulty her siblings had in pronouncing her name, Melinda, which they pronounced as "Wenda."

Wendy has continued to be an active participant in the Wendy's community, often engaging in charitable activities and supporting various causes.
