Weill Cornell Medicine

Weill Cornell Medicine (pronounced: /wi:l kɔ:rˈnɛl ˈmɛdɪsɪn/) is the biomedical research unit and medical school of Cornell University, a private Ivy League university. The medical school is located in New York City and it is committed to excellence in research, teaching, patient care, and the advancement of the art and science of medicine.

Etymology

The name "Weill Cornell Medicine" is derived from its affiliation with Cornell University, named after its founders, Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White. The "Weill" in the name comes from Sanford I. Weill, a former chairman and CEO of Citigroup, who made a substantial donation to the institution.

History

Weill Cornell Medicine was founded in 1898 in New York City as Cornell University Medical College. In 1998, the school was renamed to Weill Medical College of Cornell University after receiving a substantial endowment from Sanford I. Weill. In 2015, the institution was again renamed to its current name, Weill Cornell Medicine, to better reflect its mission in patient care, research, and medical education.
