Weekend (pronunciation: /ˈwiːkɛnd/) is a term used to describe the period of the week dedicated to rest, typically extending from Friday evening through Sunday evening.

Etymology

The term "weekend" originates from the Old English wice, meaning "week", and ende, meaning "end". It was first used in the late 19th century when the Industrial Revolution allowed workers to have two days off from their seven-day working week.
