Washburn County, Wisconsin is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 15,720. The county seat is Shell Lake, while the largest city is Spooner. Washburn County is included in the Eau Claire, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Washburn County was created in 1883 from portions of Burnett and Polk Counties. It was named after Governor Cadwallader C. Washburn, who was governor of Wisconsin during the American Civil War and later founded the company that became General Mills.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 853 square miles, of which 797 square miles is land and 56 square miles (6.6%) is water. The county is known for its scenic landscapes, which include forests, lakes, and rivers, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and camping.
