WNET is a public television station licensed to Newark, New Jersey, and serving the New York metropolitan area. It is the flagship station of the PBS network. WNET is branded as THIRTEEN, named after its channel number on the VHF band.

History

WNET first signed on the air on May 15, 1948, as WATV, a commercial television station. It was the first independent television station in the New York City market. In 1958, the station was sold to the National Telefilm Associates and became WNTA-TV. In 1961, the station was purchased by the Educational Broadcasting Corporation and became WNET, transitioning to a non-commercial educational format.

Programming

WNET produces a wide range of programming, including documentaries, news, public affairs, arts, and children's programming. Notable programs produced by WNET include Nature, Great Performances, and American Masters.

Facilities

WNET's studios are located in the Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The station's transmitter is located at the Empire State Building.
