Vilas County is a county located in the northern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 23,047. Its county seat is Eagle River. The county was created in 1893 and named after William Freeman Vilas, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin.

Geography

Vilas County is known for its numerous lakes and forests, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, and hiking. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,018 square miles (2,640 km²), of which 857 square miles (2,220 km²) is land and 161 square miles (420 km²) (16%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Vilas County is largely driven by tourism, particularly outdoor recreational activities. Education

Vilas County is served by several school districts, including the Northland Pines School District and the Lac du Flambeau School District. Higher education opportunities are available at nearby institutions such as Nicolet Area Technical College.

Transportation

Major highways in Vilas County include U.S. Highway 45, Wisconsin Highway 70, and Wisconsin Highway 155. The county is also served by the Eagle River Union Airport.
