Urticarial syndromes
Urticarial Syndromes
Urticarial syndromes (pronounced: ur-ti-care-ial sin-dromes) are a group of medical conditions characterized by the development of hives or urticaria, which are red, itchy welts on the skin. The term "urticarial" is derived from the Latin word "urtica", meaning "nettle", and the Greek word "syndrome", meaning "running together", indicating the combination of symptoms that run together in these conditions.
Classification
Urticarial syndromes can be classified into two main types: acute and chronic.
- Acute Urticarial Syndrome is characterized by the sudden onset of hives that last for less than six weeks. It is often caused by an allergic reaction to food, medication, or insect bites.
- Chronic Urticarial Syndrome is characterized by hives that persist for more than six weeks. The cause of chronic urticarial syndrome is often difficult to determine, but it can be associated with autoimmune diseases, infections, or malignancies.
Symptoms
The main symptom of urticarial syndromes is the development of hives, which are red, itchy welts on the skin. Other symptoms can include angioedema, which is swelling of the deeper layers of the skin, and systemic symptoms such as fever, joint pain, and malaise.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of urticarial syndromes is primarily based on the clinical presentation. Additional tests, such as allergy testing, blood tests, and skin biopsy, may be performed to identify the underlying cause.
Treatment
The treatment of urticarial syndromes primarily involves avoiding the triggering factors and managing the symptoms. Medications such as antihistamines, corticosteroids, and leukotriene inhibitors may be used to reduce the inflammation and itching.
