University of Putra Malaysia
University of Putra Malaysia (UPM) (IPA: /ˈjuːnɪvɜːrsɪti ɒv ˈpʊtrə məˈleɪziə/), is a public university located in Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia. It was formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia or Agricultural University of Malaysia.
Etymology
The name "Putra" in the university's name refers to the prince (Malay: putra), an homage to the royal family of Malaysia. The term "Universiti Pertanian Malaysia" translates to "Agricultural University of Malaysia" in English, reflecting the university's origins as an agricultural college.
History
UPM was established in 1931 as the School of Agriculture. In 1947, it was renamed the College of Agriculture Malaya and upgraded to university status in 1971. The university has since expanded to include faculties in medicine, engineering, and business, among others.
Faculties
UPM has 16 faculties, including the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Faculty of Business and Economics, and Faculty of Agriculture.
