The University of Otago (pronunciation: /ˈoʊtɑːɡoʊ/) is a public university located in Dunedin, New Zealand. It is the oldest university in New Zealand, having been established in 1869 by a committee led by Thomas Burns.

The name "Otago" originates from the Māori word "Ōtākou", which refers to a settlement on the Otago Peninsula. The exact meaning of "Ōtākou" is not known, but it is believed to refer to a place of red earth.
