The University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center (UM CRMC) is a hospital located in Charles County, Maryland. It was formerly known as Physicians Memorial Hospital and Civista Medical Center. The hospital is now owned and operated by the University of Maryland Medical System, a private, non-profit health system corporation. UM Charles Regional Medical Center serves Charles County and the surrounding areas of southern Maryland. The medical center's mission is to provide health education and open access to healthcare.
History
In 1926, a tornado struck Charles County, resulting in numerous casualties. This event prompted the county leadership to establish a hospital to serve the community.[1] The hospital initially served 408 patients in 1939 and now has the capacity to treat 42,000 patients annually. In 2008, a major renovation and expansion project was completed, doubling the size of the facility and enhancing the emergency department.
University of Maryland Medical System
In July 2011, Civista Medical Center announced its affiliation with the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).[2] On July 1, 2013, the hospital officially became the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center and joined UMMS, marking the first expansion of UMMS in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.[3][4]
