The University of Maine (UMaine or UMO) is a public university located in Orono, Maine. It is the flagship institution of the University of Maine System. Founded in 1865, the university is a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant institution. The University of Maine is the largest university in the state and offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.
History
The University of Maine was established in 1865 under the provisions of the Morrill Act, which provided federal land to states to finance the establishment of colleges specializing in "agriculture and the mechanic arts." The university opened on September 21, 1868, as the Maine State College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. In 1897, the college was renamed the University of Maine.
Campus
The University of Maine's main campus is located in Orono, along the Stillwater River. The campus spans 660 acres and includes numerous academic buildings, research facilities, and student residences. Notable buildings include the Fogler Library, the Collins Center for the Arts, and the Alfond Arena.
Academics
The University of Maine offers over 90 undergraduate majors and academic programs, as well as 70 master's degree programs and 30 doctoral programs. The university is organized into several colleges, including the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, the College of Education and Human Development, and the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture.
Research
The University of Maine is classified as a research university with high research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university conducts research in various fields, including climate change, renewable energy, forestry, and marine sciences. The Advanced Structures and Composites Center is a notable research facility on campus.
Athletics
The University of Maine's athletic teams are known as the Maine Black Bears. The university competes in the NCAA Division I and is a member of the America East Conference for most sports. The football team competes in the Colonial Athletic Association. The university has a strong tradition in ice hockey, with the men's team having won two national championships.

The University of Maine has produced many notable alumni, including Stephen King, a renowned author; Olympia Snowe, a former U.S. Senator; and Lawrence Bender, a film producer known for his work on Pulp Fiction.
