Underberg is a digestif bitter produced at Rheinberg in Germany by Underberg AG, made from aromatic herbs from 43 countries, which undergo inspections and are based on a secret Underberg family recipe whose details are kept secret. The drink matures in Slovenian oak barrels for several months to enhance the flavor.

History

The Underberg brand was established by Hubert Underberg-Albrecht in 1846, and the company is still owned and managed by the Underberg family, now in the fifth generation. The distinctive packaging, a small 20ml bottle wrapped in straw-paper, was introduced in 1949 and has been used ever since.

Ingredients and Production

Underberg contains 1.3 percent herbal extract by weight, which includes aromatic, digestion-stimulating, relaxing and calming active substances, and naturally occurring vitamin B1. The herbs are from 43 countries, and the exact number and identity of the herbs remain a well-guarded secret.

The drink matures in barrels made of Slovenian oak, which contributes to its unique flavor and helps to break down the herbal extract and make it smoother.

Consumption and Uses

Underberg is usually consumed after meals and is believed to aid digestion. It is served in its own portion-sized bottle, which should be shaken before consumption. The entire contents of the bottle should be drunk at once.

Underberg has received numerous awards for its unique taste and quality, including the gold medal at the Monde Selection in Brussels for the highest quality in bitters.
