Troxerutin
Troxerutin is a natural flavonoid also known as vitamin P4. It is found in many plants, but most notably in green tea. Troxerutin is a derivative of the natural bioflavonoid rutin. Through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-thrombotic actions, troxerutin has a range of health benefits.
Chemical Structure
Troxerutin is a trihydroxyethylated derivative of rutin. The chemical structure of troxerutin includes three hydroxyl groups, which are each ethoxylated. This modification increases the water solubility of the molecule compared to its parent compound, rutin.
Sources
Troxerutin is found in a variety of plants, including Sophora japonica (Japanese pagoda tree), green tea, and certain species of Cucurbitaceae (gourd or melon family). It is also available as a dietary supplement.
Health Benefits
Troxerutin has been studied for its potential health benefits in a variety of areas. These include:
- Antioxidant Activity: Troxerutin has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which means it can neutralize harmful free radicals in the body.
- Anti-inflammatory Effects: Troxerutin has been found to reduce inflammation in the body, which can help with conditions such as arthritis.
- Anti-thrombotic Actions: Troxerutin can help prevent blood clots, reducing the risk of stroke and heart attack.
- Protection Against Radiation Damage: Some studies have suggested that troxerutin can protect against damage caused by radiation therapy.
- Potential Benefits for Diabetes: Some research has suggested that troxerutin may help manage blood sugar levels and prevent complications of diabetes.
Safety and Side Effects
Troxerutin is generally considered safe when used as directed. However, some people may experience side effects such as diarrhea, upset stomach, or headache. As with any supplement, it's important to talk to a healthcare provider before starting to take troxerutin.
