Trimester

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Trimester is a term used in pregnancy to describe the three stages, each approximately three months long, that make up the typical duration of a pregnancy. The term is derived from the Latin tri meaning "three" and mester meaning "month".

First Trimester

The first trimester is the initial stage of pregnancy, starting from the first day of the last menstrual period and continuing until the end of week 13. This period is characterized by rapid changes for both the mother and the developing fetus. The fetus develops its most vital organs during this stage, including the brain, heart, and lungs.

Second Trimester

The second trimester spans from week 14 to the end of week 26. During this stage, the physical symptoms of pregnancy become more apparent. The fetus continues to grow and develop, and the mother may begin to feel the baby's movements.

Third Trimester

The third trimester begins at week 27 and ends with the birth of the baby. This is the final stage of pregnancy, during which the fetus continues to grow and mature. The mother may experience more discomfort as her body prepares for labor and delivery.
