Trichoadenoma

Trichoadenoma (pronounced: trik-oh-aden-oh-ma) is a rare benign tumor that originates from the hair follicle. The term is derived from the Greek words "trichos" meaning hair, "aden" meaning gland, and "oma" meaning tumor.

Etymology

The term "Trichoadenoma" is derived from three Greek words: "trichos" (τρίχα), meaning hair; "aden" (ἀδένας), meaning gland; and "oma" (ὄμμα), meaning tumor or mass. Thus, the term literally translates to "hair gland tumor."

Description

Trichoadenoma is a benign neoplasm that originates from the outer root sheath of the hair follicle. It was first described by Nikolowski in 1958. The tumor is usually solitary and presents as a small, firm, skin-colored or slightly pigmented nodule. It is most commonly found on the face, particularly the nose, but can occur anywhere on the body.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Trichoadenoma is typically made through a biopsy of the lesion. Histologically, the tumor is characterized by multiple, well-circumscribed, lobulated masses of basaloid cells in the dermis. These cells resemble the cells of the outer root sheath of the hair follicle.

Treatment

Treatment for Trichoadenoma typically involves surgical excision of the tumor. Because the tumor is benign, it does not spread to other parts of the body, and removal of the tumor is usually curative.
