Timavo River

The Timavo River, also known as the Timava or Timavus, is a river located in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy, near its border with Slovenia. Course

The Timavo River has a very short above-ground course of approximately 2 kilometers near its mouth in the Gulf of Trieste, but its underground journey is what makes it extraordinary. The river originates from the Reka River in Slovenia, which disappears into the Škocjan Caves—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—and continues its path through a complex system of underground channels for more than 30 kilometers before re-emerging near San Giovanni di Duino, Italy. This resurgence is a spectacular sight, with the river suddenly appearing from multiple sources in a karstic landscape.
