Tim Kaine
American politician and lawyer
Timothy Michael Kaine (born February 26, 1958) is an American politician and lawyer serving as the junior United States Senator from Virginia since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 38th Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 2002 to 2006, the 70th Governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010, and the Chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011. Kaine was the Democratic nominee for vice president in the 2016 election, running alongside Hillary Clinton.
Early life and education
Tim Kaine was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and grew up in Overland Park, Kansas. He graduated from Rockhurst High School, a Jesuit all-boys preparatory school in Kansas City, Missouri. Kaine earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Missouri in 1979. He then attended Harvard Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1983.
Early career
After graduating from law school, Kaine worked as a law clerk for Judge R. Lanier Anderson III of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He then entered private practice, specializing in fair housing law and representing clients who had been discriminated against on the basis of race or disability.
Political career
Mayor of Richmond
Kaine began his political career as a member of the Richmond City Council, serving from 1994 to 1998. He was elected Mayor of Richmond in 1998, serving until 2001. During his tenure, he focused on reducing crime and improving the city's public schools.
Lieutenant Governor of Virginia
In 2001, Kaine was elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, serving under Governor Mark Warner. As lieutenant governor, he presided over the Virginia Senate and worked on issues such as education and economic development.
Governor of Virginia
Kaine was elected Governor of Virginia in 2005, succeeding Mark Warner. His term as governor was marked by efforts to improve transportation infrastructure, expand pre-kindergarten education, and implement a statewide smoking ban in restaurants and bars.
Chair of the Democratic National Committee
In 2009, Kaine was appointed Chair of the Democratic National Committee by President Barack Obama. He served in this role until 2011, focusing on party organization and fundraising.
U.S. Senate
Kaine was elected to the United States Senate in 2012, defeating Republican candidate George Allen. He was re-elected in 2018. In the Senate, Kaine has focused on issues such as healthcare, education, and foreign policy. He serves on several committees, including the Senate Committee on Armed Services and the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
Personal life
Kaine is married to Anne Holton, who served as the Virginia Secretary of Education from 2014 to 2016. They have three children. Kaine is a devout Catholic and fluent in Spanish, having spent a year in Honduras as a missionary during law school.
