Thyrohyoid branch
Branch of the superior thyroid artery
The thyrohyoid branch is a small artery that arises from the superior thyroid artery, which is a branch of the external carotid artery. This artery plays a crucial role in supplying blood to the thyrohyoid muscle and the surrounding structures in the neck.
Anatomy
The thyrohyoid branch typically originates from the superior thyroid artery, which itself is one of the first branches of the external carotid artery. The superior thyroid artery descends towards the thyroid gland, and the thyrohyoid branch arises from it to supply the thyrohyoid muscle.
Course
The thyrohyoid branch travels superiorly and medially from its origin. It runs along the lateral aspect of the thyrohyoid membrane, which is a fibrous layer connecting the thyroid cartilage to the hyoid bone.
Supply
The primary function of the thyrohyoid branch is to supply oxygenated blood to the thyrohyoid muscle. This muscle is involved in the movement of the larynx and plays a role in swallowing and speech.
Function
The thyrohyoid branch, by supplying the thyrohyoid muscle, contributes to the elevation of the larynx during swallowing. This action is important for the protection of the airway and the proper passage of food into the esophagus.
Clinical significance
While the thyrohyoid branch is a small artery, its role in supplying the thyrohyoid muscle is significant for the function of the larynx. Any compromise in its blood supply could potentially affect the movement of the larynx and impact swallowing and phonation.
