The Gambia

The Gambia (pronunciation: /ˈɡæmbiə/), officially the Republic of The Gambia, is a country in West Africa. It is the smallest country within mainland Africa and is surrounded by Senegal, with a short strip of its coastline bordered with the Atlantic Ocean at its western end.

Etymology

The name "Gambia" is derived from the Mandinka term "Kambra/Kambaa", referring to the Gambia River which flows through the heart of the country.

Geography

The Gambia is a small and narrow country whose borders mirror the meandering Gambia River. It lies between latitudes 13 and 14°N, and longitudes 13 and 17°W.

Climate

The Gambia has a tropical climate. A hot and rainy season normally lasts from June until November, but from then until May, cooler temperatures predominate.

Health

Healthcare in The Gambia is provided by both public and private sectors. The Ministry of Health oversees healthcare in the country and operates numerous health facilities.
