Ten Thousand Villages is a non-profit organization that markets handmade products from artisans in developing countries. It is one of the largest and oldest fair trade organizations in the world, having been established in 1946 by Edna Ruth Byler. The organization is a founding member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and the Fair Trade Federation (FTF).

History

Ten Thousand Villages began as a project of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Edna Ruth Byler, a volunteer with MCC, started the initiative after visiting Puerto Rico and witnessing the poverty faced by local artisans. She began selling their needlework to friends and family in the United States, which eventually led to the establishment of Ten Thousand Villages.

Mission

The mission of Ten Thousand Villages is to create opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to markets through long-term, fair trading relationships. The organization aims to alleviate poverty by providing sustainable economic opportunities.

Products

Ten Thousand Villages offers a wide range of products, including home decor, jewelry, accessories, gifts, and personal care items. All products are handmade by artisans using traditional techniques and sustainable materials.

Fair Trade Principles

Ten Thousand Villages adheres to the following fair trade principles:

  • Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers
  • Transparency and accountability
  • Fair trading practices
  • Payment of a fair price
  • Ensuring no child labor and forced labor
  • Commitment to non-discrimination, gender equity, and women's economic empowerment
  • Ensuring good working conditions
  • Providing capacity building
  • Promoting fair trade
  • Respect for the environment

Stores and Online Presence

Ten Thousand Villages operates both physical stores and an online store. The physical stores are located across the United States and Canada, providing customers with access to unique, ethically sourced products. The online store allows for a broader reach, enabling customers worldwide to purchase fair trade items.

Impact

The organization has had a significant impact on the lives of artisans and their communities. By providing a stable source of income, Ten Thousand Villages helps artisans improve their living conditions, access education, and invest in their communities. The fair trade model also promotes cultural preservation by supporting traditional crafts and techniques.
