Talofibular ligament

The Talofibular ligament is a significant component of the ankle joint, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability and flexibility of the ankle. It is divided into two distinct parts: the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and the posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL).

Anatomy

The ATFL extends from the anterior margin of the lateral malleolus to the neck of the talus. Damage to the talofibular ligament, particularly the ATFL, is a common cause of ankle instability and ankle sprain. This can occur due to excessive inversion of the foot or direct trauma. Treatment typically involves physical therapy, bracing, and in severe cases, surgery.
