TRIM24

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

TRIM24 (Tripartite Motif Containing 24), also known as transcription intermediary factor 1 alpha (TIF1α), is a protein that in humans is encoded by the TRIM24 gene. This protein is part of the TRIM protein family, which is characterized by a tripartite motif including three zinc-binding domains: a RING finger, a B-box type 1 and a B-box type 2, and a coiled-coil region.

Function

TRIM24 is a transcriptional co-regulator that interacts with numerous nuclear receptors and co-repressors. It is involved in various biological processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and oncogenesis. TRIM24 negatively regulates p53, a crucial tumor suppressor, and has been found to be overexpressed in various types of cancer.

Structure

The TRIM24 protein contains several domains, including a PHD finger and a Bromodomain, which are involved in recognizing specific histone modifications, and a RING finger domain, which has E3 ubiquitin ligase activity.

Clinical significance

Overexpression of TRIM24 has been associated with the progression of several types of cancer, including breast cancer, lung cancer, and liver cancer. It has been suggested that TRIM24 could be a potential therapeutic target for cancer treatment.

Research

Research on TRIM24 is ongoing, with studies focusing on its role in cancer progression and potential as a therapeutic target. It is also being studied in the context of other diseases, such as autoimmune diseases and inflammatory diseases.
