Indusium griseum

From WikiMD's Medical Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Supracallosal gyri)

A thin layer of gray matter in the brain

The indusium griseum is a thin layer of gray matter that is located on the dorsal surface of the corpus callosum, which is a major structure in the brain that connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres. This structure is part of the limbic system, which is involved in emotion, behavior, and long-term memory.

Anatomy[edit]

The indusium griseum is a narrow band of gray matter that extends along the superior surface of the corpus callosum. It is continuous with the cingulate gyrus anteriorly and the parahippocampal gyrus posteriorly. The indusium griseum is bordered laterally by the cingulate sulcus.

Function[edit]

The exact function of the indusium griseum is not well understood, but it is believed to be involved in the processing of olfactory information and may play a role in the integration of sensory inputs with emotional responses. It is considered part of the limbic lobe, which is associated with the regulation of emotions and memory.

Development[edit]

The indusium griseum develops from the telencephalon during embryonic development. It is one of the remnants of the hippocampal formation that extends over the corpus callosum. During development, the indusium griseum is closely associated with the hippocampus and the fornix, which are key structures in the limbic system.

Clinical significance[edit]

Although the indusium griseum is not commonly associated with specific neurological disorders, its involvement in the limbic system suggests that it may play a role in conditions that affect emotional regulation and memory, such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
