Amphetamine_numbered

Substituted amphetamine is a class of compounds based on the amphetamine structure; it includes all derivative forms where the core amphetamine structure is modified by substituting, adding, or changing some of its atoms or bonds. This class of drugs is used in a wide variety of medically approved treatments and illicit drugs.

Structure and Nomenclature[edit]

The basic amphetamine structure includes a phenethylamine core featuring a phenyl ring bound to an amino (NH2) group through an ethyl chain with an additional methyl group at the alpha carbon Rα. Substituted amphetamines are a class of compounds that result from the modification of this basic structure.

Medical Uses[edit]

Substituted amphetamines have a wide range of uses in medicine, including as stimulants, anorectics, decongestants, and antidepressants. Some of the most well-known substituted amphetamines include dextroamphetamine, methamphetamine, and MDMA (Ecstasy).

Illicit Uses[edit]

In addition to their medical uses, substituted amphetamines are also widely used illicitly. The most well-known of these is probably MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy or Molly, which is used for its empathogenic effects.

Pharmacology[edit]

The pharmacological effects of substituted amphetamines are diverse. They can act as a releasing agent, reuptake inhibitor, or both, of various neurotransmitters including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. The specific effects depend on the particular compound and the way it interacts with the body's neurotransmitter systems.

Legal Status[edit]

The legal status of substituted amphetamines varies widely, depending on the specific compound and the country. In many countries, some substituted amphetamines are legal for medical use, while others are classified as controlled substances.
