Straight edge is a subculture and subgenre of hardcore punk that emerged in the early 1980s. It advocates for a lifestyle free of alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs. The term was coined by the band Minor Threat in their song "Straight Edge."

History

The straight edge movement began in the early 1980s in the United States, particularly in Washington, D.C., as part of the hardcore punk scene. Minor Threat, a band led by Ian MacKaye, is often credited with pioneering the straight edge philosophy. Their song "Straight Edge" outlined a lifestyle that rejected the excesses often associated with punk rock, such as drug and alcohol abuse.

Philosophy

Straight edge adherents, often referred to as "sXe" or "edge," typically abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs. Some also choose to abstain from promiscuous sex, adopt a vegetarian or vegan diet, and avoid caffeine and prescription drugs. The movement is characterized by its emphasis on personal responsibility and self-control.

Symbols

The most recognizable symbol of the straight edge movement is the "X" symbol, which is often drawn on the back of the hands. This practice originated from the practice of marking the hands of underage concert-goers to prevent them from purchasing alcohol. The "X" has since become a symbol of the straight edge lifestyle.

Music and Culture

Straight edge music is a subgenre of hardcore punk, characterized by its fast tempos, loud and aggressive sound, and often politically charged lyrics. Bands such as Minor Threat, Youth of Today, and Gorilla Biscuits are among the most influential in the straight edge scene.

Criticism and Controversy

The straight edge movement has faced criticism and controversy over the years. Some critics argue that the movement can be overly rigid and judgmental. There have also been instances of violence associated with militant straight edge groups, particularly in the 1990s.

Legacy

Despite the controversies, the straight edge movement has had a lasting impact on the punk and hardcore scenes. It has inspired numerous bands and continues to attract new adherents who are drawn to its message of sobriety and self-discipline.
