History

Early Years

The building that houses the Stonewall Inn was constructed in the 19th century and originally served as stables. By the 1930s, it had been converted into a bakery and later a restaurant. In the 1960s, it became a bar known as the Stonewall Inn, catering primarily to the gay community.

The Stonewall Riots

On the night of June 28, 1969, a police raid at the Stonewall Inn sparked a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBT community. These events, known as the Stonewall riots, are considered a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBT rights in the United States and around the world. Cultural Impact
