Stenocephalemys

Stenocephalyms is a genus of rodent in the family Muridae. It contains the following species:

• Stenocephalemys albipes (White-footed Stenocephalemys)
• Stenocephalemys albocaudata (White-tailed Stenocephalemys)
• Stenocephalemys griseicauda (Gray-tailed Stenocephalemys)
• Stenocephalemys ruppi (Rupp's Stenocephalemys)

Description

The genus Stenocephalemys is characterized by its long and narrow skull, hence the name which translates to "narrow head". These rodents are small to medium-sized, with a head-body length of 9 to 16 cm and a tail length of 10 to 15 cm. They have soft, dense fur that is typically brown or gray on the back and white or cream on the belly.

Distribution and Habitat

Stenocephalemys species are endemic to the highlands of Ethiopia, where they inhabit montane forests, bamboo thickets, and grasslands. They are typically found at elevations of 1,500 to 3,000 meters.

Behavior and Ecology

Stenocephalemys are primarily nocturnal and terrestrial, although they are also capable of climbing. They feed on a variety of plant material, including seeds, fruits, and leaves, as well as insects.

Conservation Status

Several species of Stenocephalemys are considered vulnerable or endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Conservation efforts are needed to protect these unique rodents and their habitats.
