Steak

Steak (/steɪk/ from Old Norse steik, "roast") is a high-quality beef taken from the hindquarters of the animal, typically cut into thick slices that are cooked by broiling or frying.

Etymology

The word "steak" comes from the Old Norse word steik, which means "roast". It was adopted into the Old English language as sticca, which means "meat on a stick". The term was later shortened to "steak" in modern English.

Types of Steak

There are several types of steak, each with its own unique characteristics. Some of the most popular types include:

  • Rib eye steak: This is a beef steak sliced from the rib section. It is both flavorful and tender, coming from the lightly worked upper rib cage area.
  • Sirloin steak: Cut from the back of the animal, sirloin steak is a naturally lean, thick cut of steak with a bold, beefy flavor.
  • T-bone steak: Named for its T-shaped bone, this steak is cut from the short loin and includes a section of tenderloin and a section of strip steak.
  • Filet mignon: This is a steak cut of beef taken from the smaller end of the tenderloin, or psoas major of the beef carcass. It is the most tender cut of beef.

Cooking Methods

Steak can be cooked in a variety of ways, including:

  • Grilling: This method involves cooking the steak over direct heat. It is a popular method for cooking steak because it gives the meat a flavorful crust.
  • Broiling: This method involves cooking the steak under high heat in an oven. It is similar to grilling, but the heat comes from above instead of below.
  • Pan-frying: This method involves cooking the steak in a hot pan with a small amount of oil. It allows for even cooking and a crispy crust.
