Spinnbarkeit (pronunciation: spin-bar-keit) is a term used in gynecology to describe the stretchiness or elasticity of cervical mucus. The term is of German origin, with "spinn" meaning "spin" or "stretch", and "barkeit" meaning "ability".

Definition

Spinnbarkeit is a characteristic of cervical mucus observed during the ovulation period of a woman's menstrual cycle. The mucus at this stage is clear and stretchy, similar to raw egg whites, and can be stretched between the fingers without breaking. This property is used as a natural fertility indicator, as it signifies the presence of estrogen and the body's readiness for conception.

Measurement

The degree of Spinnbarkeit can be measured using a Spinnbarkeit test. This involves taking a sample of cervical mucus and stretching it between two objects to see how far it can stretch without breaking. The greater the stretch, the higher the level of estrogen and the closer the woman is to ovulation.
