Sperm-associated antigen 5
Sperm-associated antigen 5 (SPAG5) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SPAG5 gene. This protein is essential for proper cell division and plays a crucial role in the process of mitosis, particularly in the stabilization and functioning of the mitotic spindle, a structure required for the segregation of chromosomes during cell division. The SPAG5 gene is also implicated in the regulation of microtubule dynamics, which is vital for cellular structure, intracellular transport, and the execution of mitosis.
Function
SPAG5 is a component of the spindle apparatus associated with microtubules. It is involved in the stabilization of the spindle microtubules and is essential for proper chromosome alignment and segregation during cell division. The SPAG5 gene is located on chromosome 17 in humans. Mutations in the SPAG5 gene or dysregulation of its expression can lead to errors in chromosome segregation, contributing to the development of aneuploidy and cancer.
