Speaking (/ˈspiːkɪŋ/) is the process of communicating or expressing thoughts, feelings, or ideas by articulating sounds and words. It is one of the key aspects of communication and is primarily used by humans, although some animal species also exhibit forms of speaking.

The term "speaking" originates from the Old English word "sprecan" which means "to speak". It has been in use since before the 12th century.
