Shoulder Arthritis

Shoulder arthritis (pronunciation: /ˈʃoʊldər ɑːrˈθraɪtɪs/) is a medical condition characterized by inflammation and degeneration of the joints in the shoulder, leading to pain and stiffness.

Etymology

The term "arthritis" is derived from the Greek words "arthro-" meaning joint, and "-itis" meaning inflammation. The term "shoulder" is from the Old English "sculdor," meaning shoulder.

Types of Shoulder Arthritis

There are several types of shoulder arthritis, including:

  • Osteoarthritis: Also known as degenerative joint disease, this is the most common type of arthritis affecting the shoulder. It is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in the shoulder joint.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: This is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just your joints. In some people, the condition can damage a wide variety of body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of shoulder arthritis include:

  • Pain: This is often the first symptom of arthritis. The pain can be constant or it may only occur when the shoulder is moved.
  • Stiffness: The shoulder may become difficult to move, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
  • Swelling: The shoulder joint may become swollen and tender to the touch.
  • Limited range of motion: As the condition progresses, it may become difficult to lift the arm or move it in certain directions.

Treatment

Treatment for shoulder arthritis may include:

  • Physical therapy: This can help to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder and improve flexibility.
  • Medication: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, a shoulder replacement may be necessary.
