Shoreham, Vermont

Shoreham, Vermont is a town located in Addison County, in the U.S. state of Vermont. The town was chartered on August 8, 1761, by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth.

Geography[edit]

Shoreham is situated in the western part of Addison County. It is bordered by the town of Orwell to the south, Whiting and Cornwall to the east, Bridport to the north, and to the west by Lake Champlain, which separates it from Essex County, New York.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2010 Census, the population of Shoreham was 1,265. The town has a total area of 47.6 square miles, of which 42.2 square miles is land and 5.4 square miles is water.

Economy[edit]

Shoreham is primarily an agricultural community, with apple orchards, dairy farms, and vegetable farms. The town is also home to the Shoreham Inn, a historic bed and breakfast.

Education[edit]

Shoreham is part of the Addison Central School District. The town has one public school, Shoreham Elementary School, which serves students in grades PreK-6. For secondary education, students attend Middlebury Union High School in Middlebury.

Notable people[edit]

Notable people from Shoreham include Silas H. Jennison, the 14th Governor of Vermont, and John W. Stewart, a U.S. Representative from Vermont.
