Middlebury, Vermont is a town in Addison County, Vermont, United States. It is the shire town (county seat) of Addison County. The town is home to Middlebury College, a private liberal arts college founded in 1800.
History[edit]
Middlebury was chartered in 1761 by Benning Wentworth, the colonial governor of New Hampshire. The town was settled in 1766 and incorporated in 1781. During the American Revolutionary War, the town was abandoned due to British and Native American attacks. After the war, the town was resettled and began to grow.
Geography[edit]
Middlebury is located in the Champlain Valley of Vermont, bordered by the Green Mountains to the east and Lake Champlain to the west. The Otter Creek runs through the town, providing a natural resource for early industry.

As of the 2020 census, the population of Middlebury was 8,496. The town has a diverse population, with a mix of students, faculty, and staff from Middlebury College, as well as long-term residents.
