Shen

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Shen is a concept in traditional Chinese medicine that is considered to be one of the three treasures (San Bao) that constitute life. The other two treasures are Qi and Jing. Shen is often translated as "spirit" and is believed to be the divine consciousness or higher self.

Concept[edit]

In traditional Chinese medicine, Shen is considered to be the most ethereal aspect of consciousness and is associated with the heart and fire element. It is believed to be responsible for consciousness, emotions, mental acuity, and thought. Shen is also associated with the ability to perceive the world around us and to make decisions. It is considered to be the aspect of the human being that is closest to the divine.

Role in Health[edit]

In traditional Chinese medicine, a healthy Shen is seen as a vital aspect of overall health. When the Shen is strong, a person is likely to be calm, peaceful, and clear-minded. When the Shen is weak or disturbed, a person may experience emotional instability, insomnia, confusion, or mental illness.

Assessment[edit]

The state of a person's Shen can be assessed by a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine through various methods, including observation of the person's spirit, complexion, and behavior, as well as through pulse diagnosis.

Treatment[edit]

Treatment to strengthen or balance the Shen may involve acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and lifestyle changes. The goal of treatment is to restore balance and harmony to the body, mind, and spirit.
