Seminar
Seminar
A Seminar (/sɛmɪnɑːr/; from Latin seminarium, meaning "seed plot") is a form of academic instruction, either at an academic institution or offered by a commercial or professional organization. It has the function of bringing together small groups for recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular subject, in which everyone present is requested to participate actively. This is often accomplished through an ongoing Socratic dialogue with a seminar leader or instructor, or through a more formal presentation of research. It is essentially a place where assigned readings are discussed, questions can be raised and debates can occur.
The term 'seminar' is derived from the Latin word 'seminarium', literally translating to "seed plot". It was originally used to refer to a group of students in a university setting who meet regularly to discuss a topic under the guidance of a professor. The professor or expert leads the discussion and the students are expected to participate actively.
