Selkirk Rex

Selkirk Rex is a breed of cat known for its distinctive curly fur. This breed is relatively recent, having originated in Montana, United States, in 1987. The Selkirk Rex is unique among Rex cat breeds for its extremely plush, woolly coat, and its curls, which are present not only in the fur but also in the whiskers. This breed is the result of a spontaneous mutation in a litter of kittens born to a rescued cat. One of the kittens, named Miss DePesto after a character from the television show Moonlighting, exhibited the unusual curly coat that became the hallmark of the Selkirk Rex breed.
History[edit]
The Selkirk Rex breed was developed following the discovery of the genetic mutation in Miss DePesto. The breeder, Jeri Newman, recognized the potential for a new breed and set about developing it by crossing Miss DePesto with a Persian cat, which contributed to the breed's plush coat and robust body. The breed was named after the Selkirk Mountains in Montana, making it the only Rex breed not named for its curly coat but rather for a location.
Characteristics[edit]
The Selkirk Rex is characterized by its large, round eyes, medium to large size, and muscular build. Its most distinctive feature is its soft, curly coat, which can be either long or short and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. The breed is known for its patient, loving, and playful temperament. Selkirk Rex cats are often described as "cat in sheep's clothing" due to their woolly coats and gentle dispositions.
Care[edit]
The curly coat of the Selkirk Rex requires regular grooming to prevent matting and to maintain its distinctive texture. However, over-grooming can frizz the curls, so it is recommended to use a wide-toothed comb for grooming. This breed is generally healthy, but like all cats, it can be prone to genetic health issues. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended to maintain its health.
Temperament[edit]
Selkirk Rex cats are known for their sociable and relaxed nature. They tend to be very affectionate with their owners and get along well with children and other pets. Their playful and patient demeanor makes them excellent companions.
Recognition[edit]
The Selkirk Rex has been recognized by major cat registries, including The International Cat Association (TICA) and the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA). It has gained popularity not only for its unique appearance but also for its charming personality.
