Save Ontario Shipwrecks
Save Ontario Shipwrecks (SOS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study, preservation, and promotion of Ontario's underwater cultural heritage. Founded in 1981, SOS is primarily composed of scuba divers and maritime history enthusiasts who share a common interest in the protection of Ontario's underwater resources.
History
Save Ontario Shipwrecks was established in 1981 in response to the increasing destruction and loss of Ontario's underwater cultural heritage. The organization was founded by a group of divers and maritime history enthusiasts who recognized the need for a coordinated effort to protect and preserve Ontario's underwater resources.
Mission
The mission of Save Ontario Shipwrecks is to preserve and promote Ontario's underwater cultural heritage through education, research, and direct action. This includes the identification, documentation, and conservation of shipwrecks and other underwater archaeological sites in Ontario's waters.
Activities
Save Ontario Shipwrecks undertakes a variety of activities to fulfill its mission. These include:
- Underwater Archaeology: SOS conducts underwater archaeological surveys to identify and document shipwrecks and other underwater sites. These surveys provide valuable information about Ontario's maritime history and contribute to the preservation of these important resources.
- Education: SOS provides educational resources and programs to raise awareness about the importance of preserving Ontario's underwater cultural heritage. This includes presentations, workshops, and publications on underwater archaeology and maritime history.
