The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is a major modern and contemporary art museum located in San Francisco, California. It was founded in 1935 under the direction of Dr. Grace L. McCann Morley. SFMOMA holds an internationally recognized collection of modern and contemporary artworks, including paintings, sculptures, photography, architecture, design, and media arts.
History
SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast dedicated solely to 20th-century art. The museum's original location was in the War Memorial Veterans Building in the Civic Center district. In 1995, SFMOMA moved to its current location at 151 Third Street in the South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood. The new building was designed by the renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta.
In 2016, SFMOMA underwent a significant expansion designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta. The expansion tripled the museum's gallery space and added a new entrance on Howard Street.
Collections
SFMOMA's collection includes over 33,000 works of art, making it one of the largest modern and contemporary art museums in the United States. The museum's holdings include significant works by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Gerhard Richter, and Ansel Adams.
The museum is particularly noted for its collection of photography, which is one of the most comprehensive in the world. SFMOMA also has strong holdings in architecture and design, with works by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier.
Architecture
The original SFMOMA building, designed by Mario Botta, is characterized by its distinctive cylindrical skylight and use of red brick. The 2016 expansion by Snøhetta added a white, undulating facade inspired by the waters of the San Francisco Bay. The expansion also includes a vertical garden, which is one of the largest living walls in the United States.
Programs and Exhibitions
SFMOMA offers a wide range of programs and exhibitions, including temporary exhibitions, educational programs, and public events. The museum's education department provides resources for teachers, students, and families, including guided tours, workshops, and online materials.
